Introduction

To help give users a consistent experience on the site, this page will outline how to format Album pages in respect of compilation albums by multiple artists.

Page Title

  • As compilation albums do not have a single artist, the artist portion of the pagename should be omitted. So instead of "Artist Name:Album Name (Year Of Release)", one should merely use "Album Name (Year Of Release)". Do not use "Various Artists" where the Artist Name would normally go.
  • The first letter of each word of the album title should also be capitalised. (For more information about LyricWiki's page naming guidelines see Page Names)

Compilation Album Page Format

The Compilation Album page consists of four sections:

  1. Various Artists Album Template
  2. Song List
  3. Album Footer
  4. Category Link

Template

The following is a generic template of how the compilation album page is formatted. Replace the sections in <<>> with the correct information and remove the <<>> completely.

# <<Song 1>> by <<Artist 1>>
# <<Song 2>> by <<Artist 2>>

Various Artists Album Template

The default Album template that appears at the top of the page when the page is created is designed for albums by a single artist. As such this should be replaced with the VariousArtistAlbum template. This will display the following text on the page:

This album includes songs by multiple artists.

to indicate that the album includes songs by multiple artists. The template also categorizes the album by it's initial and genre, gives the length of the album, and creates an area for the album cover to be displayed.

Parameters

  • The following guidelines apply to the fLetter entry:
    • The very first letter should always be used, even if the first word is A, An, or The. EX: fLetter=T
    • If the first letter is a number, then use: fLetter=0-9
    • If the first letter is a symbol, or is part of a non-Latin-based, ideographic writing system, such as Japanese, then use: fLetter=Symbol
  • If the year that the album was released is unknown, instead of a year, use: ????
  • If a picture for the album has not yet been uploaded, the PictureName can be left blank.
  • The VariousArtistAlbum template was originally used for both compilation albums and soundtracks. As such some compilation album pages have an extra parameter to that shown above, i.e. |Movie. This parameter is not required and can be removed or left blank.

Song List

The middle portion of the Album page is the tracklisting of the songs on the album.

  • Songs should be listed in the order they appear on the album.
  • Capitalize the first letter of every word in the artist's name and the song's title. If the song has different capitalization than this, the links may have an alternate text specified. This is done by changing the capitalization the second time the song title is listed in the line.

Example:

acTuaL capItaliZation of thE soNg
  • Special notations about a song (such as whether the song is an instrumental, live performance, featured artists, etc.) should be placed after the link to the song, not as part of the song's name.
  • If the album is a multi-disc set, then the the discs should be separated with subheadings .

Example:

Disc One
# <<Song One>> by <<Artist One>>
# <<Song Two>> by <<Artist Two>>
# <<Song Three>> by <<Artist Three>>

Disc Two
# <<Song Four>> by <<Artist Four>>
# <<Song Five>> by <<Artist Five>>
# <<Song Six>> by <<Artist Six>>

A tool is available, based on a script provided by one of our users, Lentando, that will generate a formatted song list from a list of tracks - Wikifyer.

Album Footer

The next section on the Album page is the AlbumFooter template. This template creates external links to help users search for the album on Amazon and Last.fm.
The basic AlbumFooter template is

The AlbumFooter template does accept further parameters. See the Album Footer section on the main Album Help page for further information.

  • The artist name for compilation albums should be entered as Various Artists.

Category Link

A link also needs to be made at the bottom of the album page to add the album to the Category:Compilation:
