Introduction

To help give users a consistent experience on the site, this page will outline the standard format for an Artist page.

Title Guidelines

  • Capitalize the first letter of every word in the artist's name, the album's name and the song's name. (For more information about LyricWiki's page naming guidelines: Page Names)
  • For artists with names in non-english scripts, use the artist's native name as the primary article, and place a redirect at the romanized versions of the name. For example: 中島みゆき (Miyuki Nakajima) should be the primary article and 中島みゆき, Nakajima Miyuki and Miyuki Nakajima should be redirects to the primary article.
    • To create a redirect, use the command #redirect Target page. In this instance, the command would be #redirect 中島みゆき (Miyuki Nakajima).

Artist Page Format

The Artist page consists of three major sections:

  1. Wikipedia link
  2. List of albums and their songs
  3. Artist information (which includes the following:)
    1. Information about the artist (optional)
    2. Listing of a musical group's members (optional)
    3. Related artist list (optional)
    4. Category:Genre information
    5. The Artist Template
    6. Hometown information (optional)

Template

The following is a generic template of how the Artist page is formatted. Replace the sections in <<>> with the correct information and remove the <<>> completely.

Wikipedia Link

If Wikipedia has an article about an artist, then a link to that article should be given at the top of the page. The Template:Wikipedia template should be used to make this link.

  • Important: If Wikipedia's article on the artist has an added suffix, such as in Tool (band), the Template:Wikipedia and Template:Artist templates need to have the article name specified. Please refer to the template pages for the correct syntax.

Album List

  • Albums should not be separated into categories, e.g. Studio, Live, Compilations, etc., but listed in chronological order, with the earliest album released at the top of the page.
  • If the album is a multi-disc set, then separating the discs with subheadings is often helpful to break up a long list of song titles. (EX: === Disc One ===)
  • Bootlegs and other unofficial/fan made albums should not be listed.
  • Please avoid over inflating artist pages by unnecessarily listing compilation albums, e.g. Greatest Hits, Best Of, etc.

Tracklists

  • Songs should be linked to the albums they were originally released on.
  • Songs should be listed below each album heading in the order in which they appear on the album.
  • The song title should be kept as close to the official title as possible. As such additional notations, such as featured artists, whether the song is a bonus track, instrumental, live performance, etc. should be placed after the link to the song, i.e. in the second pipe, not included as part of the song's name.
  • A useful tool, the Wikifyer, inspired by one of our users, Lentando, is available to assist in the creation of tracklists. It will generate a formatted song list from a list of tracks and can be found here Special:Wikify.

Singles

  • Album pages can be used for singles by using the Single template.
  • Links should be provided on the artist page to any album pages detailing singles. However, unlike albums, tracklistings for singles should not be included on the artist's page.

Album Art

Help!
Help!

Album artwork can be displayed not only on the Album's page, but also on the Artist's page, as well. This is done by placing an Album Art template directly below the link to the Album page. The format of this template is:

Artist's Name - Album Title.jpg

So, if one wanted to display the cover to "Help!" by The Beatles, then the completed template would look like:

The Beatles - Help!.jpg

This would display the picture on the right:

Additional Notes

  • The name of the album does need to be entered in the second pipe to enable the picture to display correctly on the artist's page.
  • The picture file does not have to be named in the following format before it is uploaded to LyricWiki: (Artist's Name - Album Title.jpg). However, this format is recommended, since this is the format that is automatically searched for and inserted into Album pages. As such it does make searching for pictures much easier if the file has been named in this way before being uploaded.
  • The picture is not required to be a .jpg. Other formats, such as .gif or .png are equally acceptable.

Information About The Artist

The Wikipedia link is meant to give the user quick access to in-depth information about an artist or group, but in some instances, it may be necessary or desirable to have a very brief segment of information about an Artist. After the albums are listed, this information can be given under the heading of "Information About The Artist." This section is optional.

Listing A Musical Group's Members

Another optional section to the Artist page is a listing of a musical group's members. Current members should be listed before former members and with each given a subheading marking their status. If a group is no longer active, a single list can be used. It is also helpful if the musical contribution to the group by each member is listed as well. Members could also be listed with the timeframe of when they were a group member.

Example (for Aerosmith):

Group Members
Current Members
* Steven Tyler – Vocals, piano, harmonica (1970–current)
* Joe Perry – Lead guitar (1970–1979, 1984–current)
* Tom Hamilton – Bass guitar (1970–current)
* Brad Whitford – Guitar (1972–1981, 1984–current)
* Joey Kramer – Drums, percussion (1970–current)

Former Members
* Ray Tabano – Guitar (1970–1972)
* Jimmy Crespo – Lead guitar (1979–1984)
* Rick Dufay – Guitar (1981–1984)

Related Artists

Musical groups and artists will often have a close connection with other musical groups or artists. Linking to these artists is helpful for users to move easily from artist to artist, but is optional.

For Members Of A Group

For groups with members that have had solo projects, links can be created directly from the members list. For example, on the page for The Beatles, instead of:

* Paul McCartney (1960–1970)

There would be:

* Paul McCartney (1960–1970)

Other Connections

For other musical connections for both musical groups and individual artists, a "Related Artists" heading would be used. Placing these artists in alphabetical order is preferred.
Examples of artists that should be listed:

  1. Other bands which members have been in
  2. Band which this band spun out off
  3. Band which spun out of this one
  4. Other artists that have worked or collaborated closely & often with the artist
  5. Relatives of the artist

Example #1 (for The Beatles):

Related Artists
* Julian Lennon
* Sean Lennon
* Traveling Wilburys
* Wings
* Yoko Ono

Example #2 (for George Harrison):

Related Artists
* John Lennon
* Paul McCartney
* Ringo Starr
* The Beatles
* Traveling Wilburys

Artist Template

Use of the Template:Artist places external and internal links about the artist at the bottom of the page.
Although the Artist Template accepts further parameters to allow for direct links to be made to the artist on iTunes, MusicBrainz, etc. (see template page for complete list), the format of the basic template is:

  • The wikipedia link should have the exact article name, including any category suffixes, as seen on the Template:Wikipedia page.
  • The officialSite section should be used to an artist's official site only, not for fan sites
  • The following guidelines apply to the fLetter entry:
    • The very first letter should always be used, even if the first word is A, An, or The. EX: fLetter=T
    • If the first letter is a number, then use: fLetter=0-9
    • If the first letter is a symbol, or is part of a non-Latin-based, ideographic writing system, such as Japanese, then use: fLetter=Symbol

Genre

LyricWiki allows for artists to be categorized by their musical genre. Whilst a maximum of two genres can be added as a parameter to the Artist template by means of inserting the following: |genre = and |genre2 =, further genres can be specified, if appropriate, below the artist template using the command:

  • If you are unsure of an artist's musical genre, it is often given in the artist's Wikipedia article.

Hometowns

Artists can be tagged with his/her/their hometown using the template Template:Hometown.
For example:

will add the artist to the category Category:Hometown/United States/Nevada/Las Vegas.

  • Please use English names where these exist, i.e. "Germany" not "Deutschland", "Bavaria" not "Bayern", "Lisbon" not "Lisboa", etc. If you are unsure of the English name, it can usually be found in the English Wikipedia.
