Introduction
To help give users a consistent experience on the site, this page will outline the standard format for a Song page.
Song Page Format
The Song page consists of four major sections:
- The Song template
- The lyrics themselves.
- Any additional song information, e.g. Credits, Awards, etc. (This section is encouraged but optional)
- The SongFooter template (External links)
In addition, some songs may call for the Parental Advisory template, Songinfo template, Cover template, Covers2 template, Wikipedia template, Translation template, Parody template, LrcDB template or Awards template to be used.
Template
The following is a generic template of how the Song page is formatted, including some optional sections. The portions marked in green should be replaced with the correct information.

Title Guidelines
- Capitalize the first letter of every word in the artist's name, the album's name and the song's name. (For more information about LyricWiki's page naming guidelines: Page Names)
Song Template
The Song template is used to begin the page with a link back to the Album page(s) on which the song exists, as well as to the Artist's page. Its basic form follows the following format:
Name Of Album (Year)
Example:
Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (1967)
Result:
| This song is performed by The Beatles and appears on the album Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (1967). |
If the album's name is unknown, the middle section may be left out:

Multiple Album Appearances
If the song appears on multiple albums, the Song template may be repeated, using the command <br/> after each template to separate the albums into separate lines. The album on which the song originally appeared should be listed first, with any other major album that the song appears on following in chronological order.
Example:
Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (1967) <br/>
Anthology 1 (1995) <br/>
1 (2000)
Result:
| This song is performed by The Beatles and appears on the album Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (1967). |
| This song is performed by The Beatles and appears on the album Anthology 1 (1995). |
| This song is performed by The Beatles and appears on the album 1 (2000). |
Page Ranking Stars
Song pages may also be ranked by their level of completion. This ranking is shown on the Song page by including the parameter |star= in the Song template. The ranking may be Green, Violet, Bronze, Silver, or Gold. When one is unsure what ranking to give a page, the beginning ranking of Green should be used. If multiple albums are listed, the ranking parameter should only be used in the first Song template.
Example:
<br/>

Album Type
The Song template may also include a designation of the album type. Types may be Single, Compilation, or Soundtrack. See Song for more information about this parameter.
Featured Artists
The Song template also has a method for automatically including up to five featured artists. See Song for more information about this parameter.
Example:

Result:
| This song is performed by Kanye West and appears on the album Late Registration (2005) and features Talib Kweli, Q-Tip, Common, Rhymefest and Jamie Foxx. |
Cover and Covered Songs
If the song is a cover of another artist's original, then the Cover template should be placed after the Song template. This will provide a link to the original song's page.
The format for the Cover template is:

This would produce (once the <<>> was removed):
- This song is a cover of The Original Song Title by The Covered Artist.
If the song is the original recording and it has subsequently been covered by another artist, the Cover2 template should instead be used. The template may be repeated for each cover known.
Lyrics
Some standards for lyrics:
- Lyrics should be wrapped in <lyrics> tags. This produces a box around the lyrics, such as:
- In the early days of LyricWiki, a blank space was placed at the start of each line of lyrics, creating a dashed box around the lyrics. Many pages still have not been updated to the new formatting. Please do not use the former formatting style anymore. If you come across any such pages, please add the <lyrics> and </lyrics> tags.
- Lyrics should follow the artist's format, but if this is not known, capitalize the first letter of each line and use minimal end-of-line punctuation.
- It is best if the lyrics displayed reflect the spoken lyrics as they are found on the recorded version.
- The use of extra notations within the <lyrics> tags, such as "chorus", "verse", or "repeat" should be used only in rare cases, such as for clarity or to shorten what would otherwise be a long list of a repeated phrase at the end of a song.
- If it is considered necessary to include notations within the <lyrics> tags about the performing artists, such as in a duet, or to indicate that part of the song is "spoken", these notations should be entered immediately above the relevant section and be italicized. EX:
Crazy
Toys in the attic, I am crazy
Truly gone fishing
Instrumentals
The Instrumental template should be inserted between the <lyrics> tags for all instrumental songs.
Romanizations/Translations
Romanizations and translations should be placed directly after the original lyrics.
For more information see Help:Translations and Help:Romanization.
Additional Song Information
The following sections may not apply to every song and are optional. They may be used however, to provide additional information about the song.
To create a header for each section, surround the header title with two equal signs on each side.
Example: ==Credits==
These sections should be placed after the lyrics section, but before the external links.
Credits
This section is used to attribute the song to its authors.
It is polite to add the credits of the song onto each page
- Composer
- Lyrics by
- Musicians (vocals, guitar, drums, ...)
Awards
Information about a song's awards Award, Billboard ranking B-Hits, chart position , etc. can be placed under this heading.
Trivia
Facts that possibly nobody cares about, but you think are worth mentioning (and actually relate to the song of course), can go in the Trivia section.
Interpretations
Common interpretations of songs can be put here. Interpretations and trivia about the recording Artist or the Album the song appears on should go on those respective pages.
SongFooter Template
The SongFooter template categorizes the song. It also provides parameters for linking to many external services that provide additional information about the song. This is the preferred method of creating these links, as ordering and formatting are consistent across all songs.
SongFooter Template Example:

- The only parameters that must be completed are artist, song, fletter and language. All the other parameters are optional.
- In the case of parameter
|album=please only include a single album. - The following guidelines apply to the language parameter:
- The language name should be entered in English, e.g. German not Deutsch.
- If the singer switches between two different languages, both languages should be entered in alphabetical order separated by a hyphen, e.g. English-German, German-Russian.
- The language should be entered as Instrumental for all instrumental songs.
- The following guidelines apply to the fLetter parameter:
- The very first letter should always be used, even if the first word is A, An, or The. EX: fLetter=T
- If the first letter is a number, then use: fLetter=0-9
- If the first letter is a symbol, or is part of a non-Latin-based, ideographic writing system, such as Japanese, then use: fLetter=Symbol
To see better how to complete the various parameters of the SongFooter template and a complete list of parameters that the SongFooter currently accepts, see the Template:SongFooter page.
Wikipedia Template
Many songs now have article pages on Wikipedia. Where this applies, the optional parameter |wikipedia = can be used in the SongFooter to create an external link to the article, or if preferred the Wikipedia template can be used to create a more noticeable link within a floating box. For further information on linking to Wikipedia, see the Template:Wikipedia page.
Timed Lyrics Template
A template exists that provides a link to timed lyrics on lrcdb.org. This should be placed directly below the SongFooter. For details on how to complete this, see Template:LrcDB.
Songinfo Template
A Song Info template exists that puts a colored information box on the page, like this:
This was made by writing |
You can use this at the top of a lyrics page to give important additional information about the song. Use this template sparsely. If the information is relevant but not very important use the Trivia subsection as mentioned above.
Parental Advisory Template
For songs with explicit lyrics, it is suggested that the Template:Parental Advisory template be used to warn viewers about it. This pushes the lyrics off the page and displays a noticeable warning. Simply place the following on the line directly above the lyrics section: Parental Advisory
Parody Template
Similarly, if the song is a parody of another song, use the Parody template after the song template.
The format for the Parody template is:

This would produce (once the <<>> was removed):
- This song is a parody of The Original Song Title by The Parodied Artist.
"Weird Al" Parody Template
Also, due to the number of parodies by "Weird Al" Yankovic, there is a separate template for his parodies.
The format for the "Weird Al" Parody template is:
<<The Parodied Artist>>
This would produce (once the <<>> was removed):
| "Weird Al" Yankovic is famous for his parodies of well-known songs. This song is a parody of The Original Song Title by The Parodied Artist. |
Updating Formatting
A short time after the wiki was setup, several of the templates used in song pages were created. This has made editing pages much simpler, but many pages exist in the wiki that are not formatted this way. If you come across one, please update the formatting by doing the following:
Replace Artist Links
Old Format:
by Eels On Album (1954) by Ima Artist
New Format:
Album Name (Album Year)
The Album Name and Year are optional. If you cannot find what album the song is on, use this:

Replace External Links
Old Format:
== External Links == Search for creative=9325&path=external-search%3Fsearch-type=ss%26index=music%26keyword=Mr.%20E's%20Beautiful%20 Blues%20Eels Mr. E's Beautiful Blues on Amazon
New Format:
{{SongFooter
|artist = <<Name Of Artist>>
|song = <<Name Of Song>>
|fLetter = <<First Letter Of Song's Name>>
|language = <<Language Name (in English)>>
|album = <<Name Of Album>>
