[edit] The Templates
The essential page ranking templates, {{Song Rank}}, {{Song Info}}, {{Watcher}}, & {{Cert}} and their surrounding box (created by {{Star Box}}) are placed at the top of the Talk page of the song being ranked. The talk page is reached by using the "Discussion" tab at the top of the Song's page. (Any discussion about the Song should still be on this page, set below this template group.)
The grouping of page ranking templates is shown below. Portions shown in GREEN should be changed to correctly reflect the state of that parameter:

Please note that the {{Watcher}}, & {{Cert}} templates are optional, but are required for the Song page to reach the Gold level.
There is an optional parameter that can also be added to the {{Song Info}} template for songs that are made freely available for downloading from the artist's Official Site. The parameter |download = can be added, although it is not necessary for any ranking.
After adding the above template group to the Talk page, the parameter |star= needs to be added to the {{Song}} template. This provides a visible indicator of the song's current rank by way of displaying a star on the Song page. An example of this is given below:
{{Song|ALBUM TITLE (DATE)|ARTIST NAME|star=STAR TYPE}}
[edit] Star Types
[edit] Green
Songs at the Green level are new and in need of human attention. They likely do not have the required sections of the {{Song Info}} template completed.
[edit] Violet
Songs at the Violet level have special needs. Usually, these revolve around non-English language and the unique challenges they present to webpages. Violet pages are tagged with a {{Code Purple}} and a general topic of the problem. Specifying a sub-type to the problem greatly helps the people with the right kind of expertise find the page. Songs at the Violet level may have all necessary {{Song Info}} sections completed, but until the special problems are corrected, should not have their level changed.
[edit] Bronze
Songs at the Bronze level, have someone watching it, protecting it from vandals, and working to improve it. All necessary sections of the {{Song Info}} template have not yet been filled in.
[edit] Silver
Songs at the Silver level have had all necessary sections of the {{Song Info}} template filled in, have someone watching it, but still await the necessary person to certify the contents using the {{Cert}} template.
[edit] Gold
Songs at the Gold level are complete! All necessary information has been filled in, it has at least one watcher, and has been certified. Small changes and updates may take place, but a Gold level Song page should be an example of excellence.
[edit] Status
The following markers may be used to mark a section's status:
- unknown - this section has not been completed on the Song page
- done - this section has been completed on the Song page
- not applicable - this section has not been completed because it does not apply to the Song.
- Example: Unless a song has been released as a single and has seen enough success to be ranked on the Billboard charts, it likely does not have a Wikipedia entry. Such songs would have the Wikipedia section of the {{Song Info}} template marked as "not applicable".
[edit] User's Name
For both the {{Watcher}} template and the {{Cert}} template, merely enter your basic User Name. If you are PageRankingUser, then enter PageRankingUser in those template locations. Do not enter your User Name with the User: prefix.
[edit] Means of Certification
Whenever certifying a Song page, the lyrics should always be compared with the actual recording. Comparing to lyrics included with the Song's album to the lyrics displayed can be helpful to match spelling (British artists often use British-styled spelling, etc.) and punctuation, but the lyrics of the actual recording may vary from official lyrics given in printed form or on the Artist's website. Mentioning in the {{Cert}} template's Means of Certification parameter that the lyrics were also checked with these printed forms is encouraged, but to be properly certified the lyrics must be compared to the recorded version.
- Example: Audio comparison made, spelling & punctuation matched with the lyrics with the CD.
[edit] Special Notes
[edit] Credits
In order for the Credits section to be marked as done, the Song's composer and lyricist need to be listed in a Credits section under the Song's lyrics. If one person was both composer and lyricist, then a single "Written by" note can be used listing the one author. Other credits, such as featured artists and musicians can also be listed, but only the composer and lyricist are required.
Examples:
- Composer: Richard Rodgers
- Lyricist: Oscar Hammerstein II
- or:
- Written by Paul Simon
