[edit] Merge

I like the Help:Templates/Listing page. I always thought that the template help page should be more all-inclusive, but didn't have the time nor template experience to improve it further. My vote is to keep the current intro, drop the rest and tack on the listing. I'll copy the current info here to their correct template pages in anticipation of a merge here. --Kiefer <img src="/images/5/58/KieferE.jpg" alt="Esperanza" /> <img src="/images/f/f9/KieferTalk.jpg" alt="Talk!" /> 20:51, 29 December 2006 (EST)

Okay, some templates are protected. Grrrrr. On to the talk pages, then. --Kiefer <img src="/images/5/58/KieferE.jpg" alt="Esperanza" /> <img src="/images/f/f9/KieferTalk.jpg" alt="Talk!" /> 21:06, 29 December 2006 (EST)

I just wanted to have a list, but indeed the current page is so incomplete we can better drop it entirely (except for the intro) and replace it with the listing. And while we're on the subject anyway, maybe I should create a TemplateDoc template to uniformly format the documentation with all templates for easy reference. Currently, I think the formatting requirements and the correct use of the templates is a little complicated. When it's very clear which templates to use and how it'd be easier to maintain the correct formatting on new pages by all users. --Mischko <img src="/images/3/31/Talkicon.png" alt="Talk to me" /> <img src="/images/1/1e/EsperanzaIcon.png" alt="Esperanza Member" /> 07:37, 30 December 2006 (EST)
BTW, I support the merge.
Mischko, I'm confused as to what you see as a problem that a TemplateDoc template would help. Can you describe this further? Thanks! --Kiefer <img src="/images/5/58/KieferE.jpg" alt="Esperanza" /> <img src="/images/f/f9/KieferTalk.jpg" alt="Talk!" />11:50, 30 December 2006 (EST)
I don't see anything as a problem. Actually, I spoke too soon, as I noticed it would be hard to make the documentation uniform and a lot of grouped template (like Song, SongFooter, Artist, Album, etc.) are already explained on one page in the help pages. So, just forget the last part of my message :) --Mischko <img src="/images/3/31/Talkicon.png" alt="Talk to me" /> <img src="/images/1/1e/EsperanzaIcon.png" alt="Esperanza Member" /> 12:51, 30 December 2006 (EST)
Seems this idea has been left to rot? I think the pages should be merged, it is very weird having some templates and info on this page and then more templates and info on another.

Newbie input here—I'd personally like to keep the pages separate, and see both better developed. To me, it better serves users to have two pages:
  • An introductory/tutorial page for novices where there is a full explanation of template basics, such as how to place them in a page, how the arguments work, and some fairly simple examples. This page should also contain a reference to the full list, and a directive to consult the individual template pages for specific information and coding examples.
  • An exhaustive list of the templates, with a very brief description of what they do. This would serve as a fast and handy reference, and savvy users would be able to quickly find what they want without having to scroll past miles of how-to information they already know.
Of course, you would also have the template pages themselves, where I would like to see more detailed information (something I'm not experienced enough to tackle). Some pages just display a sample of what the template does, but don't document the code/arguments. I think keeping things broken down into these three types of pages (introduction, quick list, and detailed reference) would do well to serve both novice users and experts.
