[edit] Translation Template
I tried pouring this into a template but the arguments don't seem to get expanded inside the <lyrics> tags. A test is available on my user page. I think someone with Wiki-knowledge is required to fix it. Mischko 12:24, 15 September 2006 (PDT) (moved from Help:Translations)
- Well, the problem with this is that wikitext does not expand inside <lyric> tags. So there are basically two choices. One is to write an extention to MetaWiki/expand the existing 'lyric' extention. The other is to make only translation header into a template so that it can be use like
{{TranslationHeader}}
==Language==
<lyric>
test text
</lyric>
||
==Translation==
<lyric>
test text
</lyric>
|}
- This is the part of the translation that always bugged me. I would have to go to the help section every time I wanted to add a translation. I was going to create the template, but never got around to doing it.
- Also, the language category probably should not be included in this template. This is because for some languages, the translation is put against a romization of the lyrics and not the original lyrics. Using the translation template to flag songs with their language would end up mis-categorizing the songs. The language should instead be specified in the Template:SongFooter. If there is more than one language, the SongFooter template should be modified to allow more than one language.

- In the source code I see this line
- #parse embedded wikitext
- return $parser->parse($transform, $parser->mTitle, $parser->mOptions, false, false)->getText();
- Appearantly it is a shortcoming of the (MediaWiki) $parser->parse function, that it doesn't substitute {{{1}}} with the argument of templates. A fix can be found here while a more extended (and by the looks of it, more dangerous) can be found here]. Unfortunately that seems to be the simpelest way to achieve argument expansion inside the lyrics tags... maybe we could try to get the hack in the second link included in the "official" version though. OK, I fixed the template, it works now as you suggested (only the header is in the template, for the exact use see the example. Your have a point with your arguments for leaving out the language category. I left it in the template but feel free to take it out. I myself am still in doubt, on one hand you are right that it should be in the SongFooter, on the other hand the Translation template is a template to add translations, otherwise we'd better rename it to TwoColumn or something like that. Anyway, see if it's useful now (two examples are on my talk page, see signature). Mischko 02:07, 5 October 2006 (PDT)
[edit] Double column width for Non-Latin Based Scripts
The widths are 450 and 400. Could they be changed to 400 and 400, or unspecified width? I have a feeling that they should, because as the left column gets wider, the right column gets squashed. This usually results in the sentences not fitting and column heights become funny thus the sentences (Romaji and Translation) are no longer aligned.
- Note: It depends on screen resolution and the length of sentences.

- I am aware of this, I have problems myself. The right 80 pixels of my screen have my taskbar, system monitoring widgets, and music player. I have found that using percentages instead of specific pixel values is a better way of doing this. I'll do a little testing with a dummy version of {{Translation}} and see how it goes.

- I can't remember how percentages were written... (I used to do heaps of HTML languages, but not recently)

[edit] Pagetitle-syntax???
maybe a general pagetitle syntax would help to keep the wiki clear. I think the best would be like on the main page, so the pagetitle should be like this:
'page title'/'language code' so artist/en or songtitle/de something like this... the language codes are Help:Templates#Multiple_Languages. page title is the name of the song/album. is this a good Idea??? I think so... maybe someone (me too) can add this to the page? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Mihawk90 (talk • contribs) .
- Currently, most language variations are just included on the main song page. Originally, I think the /en-type of pagename add-ons were created to keep the song page from getting clogged up with a long list of songs sung in different languages (Disney, I think, is the largest instance of songs in a wide variety of languages). It turned out, however, that most songs with actual recorded versions in multiple languages (as opposed to unrecorded translations), don't usually have that many versions. So, they're just kept on the main page. The /de-type endings are still valid, but have largely been abandoned, it appears, by the community. Kiefer talk contribs admin 16:21, 5 March 2008 (EST)
- Ahh, ok, I had to translate this for my own first^^ but to the topic... I wasn't speaking of one song that were recorded in different languages, but only lyric-translations for the song... translations that were never released, only for understanding in the native language... I think there it would be good to make a de/en/fr/etc ending to the site, so that it is more clear... -- greetings Mihawk90 17:07, 5 March 2008 (EST)
